The Metropolitan Police has confirmed 5 arrests made at an EDL rally in the London Borough of Dagenham and Barking this afternoon. The far-right group met at midday today, met by a large number of opposition groups and heavy policing. Reports suggested that attendance to the rally was low.
The borough has had a turbulent history with the far-right, with a number of recent rallies taking place in Dagenham and neighbouring Redbridge. However, reaction to far-right presence in the area has been strong, with the BNP losing all its 12 councillors, famously won in 2006, in the 2010 elections.
Anti-fascist groups have also been active this afternoon in forcing the cancellation of a planned EDL meeting in a Wetherspoon's pub in Stoke on Trent. Twitter followers were encouraged to telephone the pub manager informing him of the far-right groups planned attendance.
